🚨Batman Forever🚨was released in 1995 under a new director, Joel Schumacher. After the box office dissappoint and parental backlash of 'Batman Returns', Warner Brothers decided to go in a lighter-toned direction by not going full-on camp, but also not enough seriousness to believe in any of the dramatic elements. Instead, you get a film that is stuck in a limbo of being too frightened to abandon Burton's darker style, something that has proven to already work, and trying to be like the 1966 film, but has too large a budget to be charming in that way. This is where Batman began going down the drain and there are many reasons for it. After 'Batman' came out in 1989, Warner Brothers realized how financially viable this property was. From toys to sponsors, Batman made more money outside of the film. So after 'Batman Returns' did so poorly among younger children, toy sales were down and sponsors were pulling out. In response, we have a film that is desperately trying to claw at your wallets, not to see the film, but to buy toys which Joel Schumacher has admitted that's what Warner Brothers hired him to do. It's very obvious that this film is utter desperation because they didn't hire actors that would be good for the role. Instead, they hired the hottest A-list actors at the time. Val Kilmer just finished getting snubbed at the Oscars over 'Tombstone', so he was hired to be Batman because he was popular. Tommy Lee Jones was hot off 'The Fugitive', so he was hired to be Two-Face. Jim Carrey just came off 'The Mask', 'Dumb and Dumber', and 'Ace Ventura', so he was hired to be The Riddler. Nicole Kidman did 'Dead Calm' with Sam Neil, so she was hired to do nothing in the film. Lastly, Chris O'Donnell just finished 'Scent of a Woman.' None of these actors were cast because they were good. They were cast because they would bring in crowds of people to see the film. While the previous two films were style over substance, we now get a film that has no style nor substance. Instead, Two-Face and The Riddler team up to put a device on everyone's head to make The Riddler smarter for some reason and Batman needs to stop them. (Continued in the comments…)
